I’m passionate about food, I’m passionate about Western Australian produce and I’m proud to be supporting the creatives that work day in and day out to not only champion our farming industry but give us incredible dining experiences too.
This month we are Plating up WA. We are celebrating this beautiful state of ours and all the diverse produce it has to offer. Our hospitality industry is run by hardworking creatives who are committed to giving us memorable dining experiences, but what I love most about the industry is the passion that these chefs have for local, sustainable produce and to use it where ever possible. They are supporting our local farmers and we need to step out and support them. Lucky for us, it actually makes the food taste better too.
Twenty venues from as far South as Denmark in the Great Southern to our Northern region in the Gascoyne are participating in Plating Up WA. All participating venues will showcase WA produce-driven dishes, with many creating a featured dish available throughout the month.
Young George chef Melissa Palinkis said, “Using local growers and WA produce is necessary on a number of levels; it’s fresher, tastes better, is good for the environment and provides income back to our producers who are right here on our doorstep.”
Chef Kenny McHardy of Manuka’s Woodfire Kitchen in Fremantle was one of the first to support the promotion, commenting, “Plating up WA is a great opportunity for us as chefs to acknowledge and celebrate our producers and growers, and to show our customers how diverse West Australian produce is and what we have on offer.”
I recently dined at chef Russell Blaikies iconic restaurant Must Wine Bar and had the privilege of listening to chef talk about our Western Australian food industry, why and how chooses to use it in his food was fantastic. Read more about this experience here.
Make a choice to support our venues across the State for Plating Up WA throughout the month of June. I know it’s dark, I know it’s cold and I know Perth tends to go to sleep this time of year but I urge you to throw on that big woolly coat and join me in supporting the restaurants committed to supporting our Western Australian farming industry.
Plating Up WA champions the diverse and plentiful produce we are blessed with. From fine dining, pubs and casual cafes, to wineries, burger bars and fish n’ chips, it’s a great excuse to get up, dine out and support this fantastic bustling industry that is supporting us.

Hope to see you out there!
