School holiday’s are only minutes around the corner and as we will be spending most of the holiday’s at home, my to-do list goes from meetings, bills, website to backyard, garage, spring clean everything!!
In the midst of a home styling and interiors project with Phaedra Adamson of Phaedra’s Style (colour post here), her crazy amazing organisation and sorting skills have slowly pushed their way through to become our first priority for the home project.
To be 100% honest, organisation is a huge part of how I get done what can sometimes feel like a million things at once, but when it comes to chores outside of necessity my organisation skills seem to fall by the way side.
So after Phaedra sorted, named, and stocked my pantry (while I got a heap of work done hehe) I was so impressed I asked her to write for us her 10 top tips for organising your pantry.
Let’s face it, the woman has a gift, and if you’re like me and can’t quite find the time to do it yourself then this magical fairy will pop over and do it for you. Voila!! Everything’s so easy to find it’s actually cut down the time I spend in the kitchen. Double yes and yes! Enjoy x
PHAEDRA’S STYLE TOP TEN TIPS FOR TAKING YOUR PANTRY FROM ORDINARY TO ORGANISED,
Why not make your pantry like any other room in your home and organise and style it! Turn it into another area you get excited to spend time in.
- SHOPPING LIST
Have your shopping list attached to the pantry door, that way you can easily keep control of your stock and never run out of anything i.e chocolate for that late night craving or panko crumbs etc… Let the family know that its there to add to it when something is running low or finished. When you go to the shops grab the list, making your shopping an organised and speedy experience.
- STORAGE PART ONE
Decide what kind of storage you would like to user i.e Glass, BPA Plastic, tin etc… I suggest Sistema BPA Plastic as it is light weight, inexpensive to stock up on and add to, easily obtainable as its sold in both Coles and Woolworths and its see through and comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Once you have decided what you would like to use I suggest stocking up on many of the same shape and size for continuity and a stylist look.
- STORAGE PART TWO
We love dried fruit and nuts in our house and storing them can be very messy so I again turn to Sistema. I buy all our dried fruit and nuts in bulk and place them into the two sections to a box Sistema.
I make up around 20 at a time small sandwich bags containing a little of each fruit and nut and have them in their own box for an easy grab and go snack. I keep them in my bag and in the car centre console for my son at kindy pick up or when we are out and about and I cant get him a healthy snack quickly. He loves his snack bags.
- STORAGE PART THREE
Obviously there are many other foods that are stored in a pantry ie kids muesli bars, small packets of chips etc. Again I store them out of their box in Sistema.
- NOT IN THE PANTRY
Please believe me when I tell you that for a healthy pantry i.e no rodents it is best to keep all Bread, potatoes and onions in the fridge. I also keep all open crackers in the fridge in their own Sistema. They will last longer and keep their crunch.
I like to add a decorative tray to a pantry for all bottled stock that is open and being used. Place it in the foreground as if you let everyone know that this is open stock and to be used before going hunting and opening another olive oil etc. This tray would typically hold open oils, vinegars, honey, sauces etc. If you like to be prepared for Armageddon then keep extra stock of the open items behind them, neatly please!
NOTE: I believe that open Vegemite, Soy Sauce, Tomato Sauce, Jams and Mustard are to be kept in the fridge, yes the FRIDGE!
- HERBS AND SPICES
These often don’t have a long shelf life so I like to keep an eye on expiry date and often this is difficult if you are buying herbs and spices in bags or those little jars. I suggest keeping all herbs and spices together in a large Sistema box and as you buy them remove them from their store packaging and place them into small plastic sandwich bags that you can write the date and name of contents on. This will also mean easier access when cooking and storing.
Label all Sistema with Artliner and when you want to change the name on the label you do so by rubbing off the existing label with Orange Oil on a cloth. All of this is available at Woolworths and Coles.
NOTE Orange Oil is a must in any kitchen/home its amazing for cleaning and it smells fab.
- ALCOHOL SHELF
I need easy access to my Shiraz when making Dinner. I also love the look of a healthy stocked beverage shelf. I make the top shelf of the panty my bar area, Its also not in reach of children. Place all similar stock next to each other and arrange it all so it all looks inviting.
Wines together, spirits together, beer together. Remember when restocking to place new stock at the back and old at the front for good stock rotation.
- ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH
Depending on the size of your pantry I love to add personal touches that are nothing to do with food or beverages, i.e a framed family photo, a notice board on the door or wall, a sweet little nick nack made by one of the kids that’s to ‘special’ to be kept on the lounge room mantle.
Have fun with your pantry, and keep it neat. You will want to cook more with the contents of a beautifully styled pantry and not to mention save money. Better organisation will lead to less wastage.
