This year didn’t start all that flash for me. After burning that candle at both ends for most of 2015, 2016 had other ideas. A bit of a health issue very early on in the year forced me to stop in my tracks and basically kept me underground for the month of January.
This being said I truly believe the universe sends us messages, mine just happened to be a message that had to be such a massive slap in the face that I wouldn’t have a choice but to stop, sit and listen.
What have I learnt from this? Nothing crazy a philosophical if that’s what you’re thinking, just a few little but life changing practices to move forward with into the new year and I very much look forward to sharing these with you as I feel my way through the rest of 2016.
One of the most important practices I missed from this knock down was exercise, not only for my physical health but for my mental health also. This being said I am back on the bandwagon and like anyone who starts back into a fitness regime after a sizeable break will know, the first week’s gonna to HURT!
Before I got into the swing of things I decided that with this year I was not only going to keep up the fitness but I was going to balance my body and mind with yoga and stretching. I’ve always dabbled with and loved yoga but when time is poor it’s the first thing out the door.
A few weeks ago I was invited to attend a public HBF yoga class hosted by Amanda Bisk. Amanda is an ex Olympic pole vaulter who after being diagnosed with chronic fatigue had to give up her initial dream, slow down and look after her body. Apparently the universe had other plans for her because she has become a huge inspiration to people all over the world. To heal herself she took up yoga and stretching and it has literally transformed her life. She now takes these life lessons and teaches them to people all around the world.
We have all heard about the huge impact that stretching can have on our mind and bodies so I started my 2016 fitness journey by downloading Amanda Bisk’s Free Sleep Better Stretch Guide which I have had the pleasure of completing three times this week. I’m not one to shy from a sweat session so I need to balance up my stretching with the sweaty fitness I love so this week I smashed out two Lafit classes, one boxing class at Anarchy and a yoga class at Twenty Four Seven in Shenton Park. Perfecto.
Pretty safe to say I’m feeling fantastic! A little sore but fantastic and I know that the extra time taken to stretch my body has had a huge impact on my recovery, sleep and to be completely honest, my work and home life. It’s a great way to force your mind and body into being present and in the moment.
With this weapon in my back pocket, 2016 is shaping up to be a very exciting year. Working smarter, being balanced and staying energized are my main focus’s and I truly believe life will flow from there.
Have you made a change this year? What’s your focus for 2016? As always, I love hearing you.
