Angelina Jolie was quoted saying “Shiloh’s clothes are not my choice. I have a very strong willed four year old girl who tells me what she wants to wear and I let her be who she is”.
I will say it’s been quite a smack in the face. When I as a little girl I was into transformers and care bears, lego and bike riding. Princess stories and pink things did not float my boat. Naturally, when I gave birth to Autumn I automatically assumed that she would have similar traits to me as a child. This has not been the case.
She is a fairy loving, ballet dress wearing, handbag holding, Cinderella kind of girl. It is so fascinating to watch.
The moment my son could walk he has been able to swing, and hit, a golf ball. It’s not something we’ve forced him into or even overly encouraged, he has just been drawn to anything sport and lucky for him he has the coordination to match.
I think the biggest realisation that I have had is that these little people have complete minds and personalities all of their own. I mean I new they would, but not from such a young age!
I love the individual style of Angelina and Brad’s brood. She clearly has fabulous style herself and is proud to let her kids express themselves. “I would never be the kind of parent to force my children to be something they’re not”, she said of Shiloh’s love of being a tomboy.
Now lets be honest, I think we have all looked at a child extremely over dressed or at a young child naturally gifted in sport and thought the parents must be pushy, which I’m sure does happen, but I am here to say that I have now taken a new perspective. Children can be extremely strong willed and really care about things that we don’t care about or care about things that we think are unimportant.
Autumn LOVES her clothes, and jewellery and princess stories so I am running with it! I haven’t been able to dress her for over a year so I thought I would interview Autumn on her style, her thoughts about the clothes she wears and why she cares so much. Here it is….
So Autumn, what do you love about clothes? Um, they make me feel good. Anything Ballerina. It makes me feel like I want to dance.
What do you love wearing the most? My Ballerina stuff. I don’t’ like wearing jeans and jumpers because they feel itchy on my skin. It’s hard to play in them. I like wearing skirts and dresses. They have to be able to spin right up to my armpits when I spin and spin and spin.
Do you have a favourite colour? Yep! Pink and purple. Why do you like pink and purple? Cause I do, it’s my favourite colour. It makes me feel really really good when I wear pink and purple.
I love to wear slippers when I’m dancing and I love my Puma’s when I’m playing outside, like tennis.
When I dress up like a funny thing, like a rabbit I don’t love it. I want to dress up like a princess. I wear a princess crown, and my glass slippers. I don’t like to wear my hair up in a pony because that’s not what princess’s do.
Ohh….I love the simplicity of dressing just because it makes you feel good. That is the essence of style.
A very special shout out goes to our friends at Minibots Clothing. They offered to give Autumn her very first online shopping experience (poor me). Autumn was able to have a look through their website and pick a couple of pieces that she loved. From the package arriving to the modelling shoot we had of the clothes, we had some fun!! Make sure you check them out. Such fabulous, good quality, unique clothes for kids and especially for those kids who really love clothes. We love it! Thanks Minibots.
