Over summer Autumn and Lux decided that at 5.30am they were happy to get out of bed and start their day and as all of you parents out there know, when their day starts so does yours.
5.30am was not an acceptable hour in my book and to be completely honest, on the days’ when the kids were out of bed at 5.30am they would crash and burn, be irritable with each other harder to deal with.
You could attribute this to a number of factors. It’s light very early in summer, the kids started to share a bedroom, Autumn was still having a day sleep at 4yrs….. what ever the reason, before 6am I am a grumpy old troll and had to get this problem fixed pronto.
After trying various methods to get the kids to go back to bed I took the advice of a girlfriend and purchased a groclock.
The gist of the clock is that you set it for a time in the morning when you want the sun to come up. When that time comes the clock suddenly starts shining. You encourage your kids not to get out of bed until this happens. How you do this is up to you.
It wasn’t welcomed with open arms by the kids so I started the clock at 5.45am to get them use to waiting for their sun and slowly crept it up to a very acceptable (some of you might call quite greedy) 6.30am. For the first month I had a chart on the wall and if they could rack up three days in a row of getting out of bed only when the groclock said it was time, I would take them out for a treat.
Now that winter is upon us they seem to be sleeping in past 6.30am so tonight I have moved it to wake at 6.45am. Wish me luck!
Have you tried the groclock before?
