Blue Blockers. What are they and why am I wearing them.
About a month ago I purchased my first pair of blue light blocking glasses. I had seen a few people I follow on Instagram (like Rachel Finch) wear them and what they were saying about blue blockers really interested me.
Being a human in 2018 means that there’s a good chance you spend most of your day staring at a screen – phone, TV, computer, tablet … etc Actually let’s not discriminate, most of us find ourselves on the screen well into the night too. Well, the bad news is that this can apparently result in dry eyes, headaches, blurry vision, eye fatigue and insomnia.
What even is Blue light? Blue light is the bright, artificial light that is produced by LED screens, which are now included in most of our modern day technological devices.
Too much exposure to Blue light at night suppresses the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep cycles, not ideal if you’re cranking out that last all-important email at 11 pm at night, so I decided to purchase a pair of blue blocker glasses to protect my eyes from the screen so that my brain wasn’t being tricked and telling me it was time to be awake. When it gets dark in the evening, a part of the brain called the pineal gland secretes the hormone melatonin, which signals to our bodies and brains that it is time to get tired and go to sleep. The artificial blue light coming off of our screens tells our brain to stay awake and stops it secreting this ‘sleep’ hormone. To what degree I’m not sure but according to the studies, too much screen time can have a huge impact on the quality of our sleep and how easy it is to fall asleep.
There are a few things you can do to reduce the blue light in your life. First, you can try to decrease the amount of time spent in front of a screen and/or take frequent breaks to give your eyes a rest. If running your business (or two) requires a screen, fair to say this will be a tough option for you. You can purchase light blocking covers for your phone or instead, I decided to give these blue light blocking glasses a go.
Blue light blocking glasses have a specialized type of lens that helps filter out blue light and its harmful effects. Wearing blue light blocking glasses during the evening mimics natural darkness, which contributes to the production of melatonin — the hormone responsible for our sleep cycles.
So, wearing Blue Light Blocking Glasses two to three hours before bedtime can help you fall asleep faster, and help you achieve more restful sleep.
There are some researchers who believe that these glasses should be worn by everyone, including kids. Giving our children have young developing brains, the blue light could be affecting their hormones more than we care the think about. I’ve heard many stories of parents with teenage kids up all night battling to get to sleep. If this is you, this could be a safe option to try a few hours before bed.
We are on our screens now more than ever before. If you want to give your eyes and health a little break, blue light blocking glasses might just be for you.
