Halloween and kids. Geez that’s a love/hate relationship. For the kid’s, it’s the best thing ever! But from my perspective, it’s a ‘put down your guns’ situation where I feel out of control and vulnerable. Sugar filled crazy kids going troppo and of course, the responsibility of finding a fabulous costume (not to mention I secretly actually hate dress up parties). As I have three kids (yes that’s crazy in itself haha), the easier and cheaper the costume the better. I’m not the best with a sewing machine but I can give you some costume ideas that will definitely please the little ones whilst also keeping the stress and budget down.
To avoid any costume disappointments, I always ask my kids what they would like to dress up as which somewhat makes my job a little easier, that is if they know what they want. That’s not going to say their minds won’t change a million times but at least it’s a start. Lucky for me, Autumn loves princesses, ballerinas and most things ‘girlie’. This means tutus !! Which is such a bonus because most days you will see her with a tutu chucked on top of virtually anything she is wearing that day. For a Princess, you can get an embellished top and tuck it into the tutu. An off shoulder style is also cute as some Disney Princesses have off shoulder dresses. This can then be topped off with a tiara and some jewellery. For a ballerina, a basic leotard, tights, flats and a bun and you’re good to go ! You can get all this from Target for such a good price. Alternatively, you can buy a dress instead of the separates but I do love the versatility of a good separate. Here are two from Target that are only $29 ! Whack on some black lippy and a witches hat and you have a super easy version of a Halloween Princess.
Mila Moja is a WA based label that make tutus, leotards and even headpieces. They have such beautiful outfits that you can have made based on the colours you like and the kind of look you’re after. This is also all part of the fun ! Head off to Party Town, add a scar, slash or nail through the head and you have the perfect Halloween ballerina.
Now for the boys. Lux and Van are all about superheroes at the moment. They are a little too young to want the scary costumes so superheroes are perfect for them. This is actually quite easy as most places have a variety of superhero costumes to choose from. Good old trusty Target again have the usual go to’s such as Spiderman, Batman and Superman. Spotlight is another great place for costumes, they seem to have a great variety of superheroes, cartoon and movie characters. Here are some of the costumes they have at Spotlight…
Autumn’s also become quite creative so not only can she pick her costume at Spotlight, she can buy embellishments such as sequins to glue on to her tutu/leotard, a ribbon for her bun or a tiara if she decides to go as a princess.
It’s not an easy task but having a rough idea of what the kids want and where to go definitely makes a big difference ! Would love to see what costume ideas everyone comes up with this year. Frankly I have been quite useless at it so far but this could definitely be my year…. Where’s your favourite place to shop?
