As a business woman, I find myself continuously looking around the world for inspiration, but I find no better inspiration comes from that which is home grown and right in our own backyards. Being part of the Telstra Perth Fashion Festival Swim & Resort Series this year has reminded me of what amazing talent we have in Western Australia and in this incredible world of social media, when you mix talent, business savvy and hard work, there is no limit to what can be achieved.
Today on Right as Rayne I have the pleasure of introducing you to Scott Bauer, a surf photographer who is one half of the the WA duo that is Gypsea Swimwear. Printing artwork onto lycra in beautiful bold colour is a standout signature of the Gypsea Swimwear brand. I hope you will be inspired by Scott’s story.
What inspired you and how did you start Gypsea?
I’ve worked in the surfing industry as a photographer for some 15 years and I really wanted to apply my photography skills into something unique and challenging away from what I was already doing. I met Emma through her husband, proffesional surfer Mikala Jones in Hawaii. I was on assignment for the winter there and I got talking to Emma about her work designing swimwear. It wasn’t till awhile later I approached Emma about the idea of printing photography onto lycra for a new label. It was something at the time she hadn’t done much work with and she was super excited to try. We made some samples and got some really interesting and positive results, then we talked about being in partnership on the label and it just evolved from there. We worked so well together it just seemed like the right thing to do. The name came from myself I guess, traveling shooting surfing, living the Gypsy life and chasing ocean swells.
Take us through a typical work day?
Im fortunate to live in Margaret River and I base my life around the ocean, so it generally starts with that, check the surf and go shoot or body surf, if it’s flat launch the jetski and go freediving. Then it’s off to the office in Dunsborough to work with the team for the rest of the day.
Any career lessons you can share?
Not sure? If your prepared to work hard then things will pay off. Always celebrate you achievements.
Where do you find inspiration?
Nature is the biggest inspiration for Gypsea for sure. Living a healthy lifestyle.
What is your favourite Gypsea piece?
Really hard one haha! At the moment I think the Paradise Lost padded underwire bikini, it’s so crazy and cool. I remember the first time I saw the finished sample and I was so excited.
Who is your favourite person to wear Gypsea so far?
I have to say Jenna Fettig in Hawaii, she’s such a nice girl and just so stunning.
Who would you most like to see in your swimwear?
Seeing someone like Candice Swanepoel walking down the runway in Gypsea would be insane
What are your top 3 tips for women wanting to start their own business?
Do what you love and love what you do. Work hard and never give up.
