In between one of the most hectic weeks of my life I managed to sneak away from my official duties at Perth Fashion Festival to watch the SKYE & staghorn runway show.
Samantha Harris fronted the show but it was impressive in it’s own right. You can see some of my pictures from the show here.
SKYE & staghorn is the idea of Australian designer Dakota Gilbert. Growing up on the shores of WA she was inspired by the ocean to create a chic, athletic swimwear range.
I love WA business women really making it in the world so I had to catch up with Dakota for a chat.
SKYE & staghorn is fairly new. When did you start the brand?
SKYE & staghorn started nearly 2 years ago in February 2012.
What inspired you to start the brand?
Growing up in WA I think your life revolves around the beach and looking forward to buying that favourite pair of bikinis for the summer holidays!
You are currently living in Bali, why is this?
Yes I moved up here a year ago for the label, its been so beneficial for SKYE & staghorn and personally I love it up here!
Do you feel it’s easier for you to work from Bali?
It’s honestly just like working anywhere else. I wake up, have a coffee and sit down at my desk for a full days work but for me, I love the fact I can take my lunch break and have a quick dip!
What does Bali have to offer that Perth can’t?
Obviously producing is much easier up here and thats why you find a lot of designers living and working in Bali but it also has a great community and I’m so lucky to have such great friends that are also designers, we all bounce off each other, its really nice!
Your brand is effortless and beautiful. I love following your instagram feed. What would you say represents the SKYE & staghorn girl?
Thank you 🙂 I think a SKYE & staghorn girl is definitely an independent strong woman who likes to stand out from the crowd.
A lot of your pieces seem sport/luxe inspired. Do you think women are finding these cuts more flattering than your average string bikini?
I don’t think you can ever go wrong with a simple string bikini but SKYE & Staghorn is something different and I really try to stay true to this. A girl who wears SKYE & staghorn I’m sure will also have a string bikini in her wardrobe.
Being such a young brand it’s really inspiring to see a WA designer get out there and not only give it a go but creating a fabulous product. What’s next for SKYE & staghorn?
Thank you, we’re looking at branching out a little more internationally and hopefully making an appearance at Miami swim week 2014!
Where do you see your brand in 5 years?
In gorgeous boutiques all around the world!
One piece of advice you would give to someone starting a business in Perth?
Do your research and stay true to your brand from day dot!
How inspiring is that! Thank’s so much for your time Dakota.
