Muhammad Ali. ‘The greatest’ with powerful, positive messages we can all learn from.
The day after Muhammad Ali passed away my dad text me this quote “tell George, I’m gonna’ dance”. What proceeded this text was a massive text off back and forth of the best Ali’s quotes we could find from over the years. I was absolutely blown away! We’ve all heard the ultra famous “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” but what I didn’t realise was how inspirational he was when delivering other loving positive messages to the world.
I can’t say that I am a huge follower of boxing. I’ve watched a few rumbles in my time and I know who all the greats are but that’s is the extent of my boxing knowledge.
Apart from Muhammad Ali being widely regarded as one of the greatest sporting figures in history, he was also know as an inspiring, courageous and controversial figure both in and out of the ring.
Ali spoke his mind and when he wasn’t speaking about how he was ‘the greatest’ Ali was speaking out against racism, war and religious intolerance.
I was completely blown away when I started to scour through his quotes. So many of them really struck a chord in me. He spoke with conviction and used his position to relay powerful messages about controversial topics around the world.
I wanted to share some of my favourites with you here.
“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
“Friendship… is not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.”
“Don’t count the days; make the days count.”
“I know where I’m going and I know the truth, and I don’t have to be what you want me to be. I’m free to be what I want.”
“If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it—then I can achieve it.”
“It isn’t the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it’s the pebble in your shoe.”
“If you even dream of beating me you’d better wake up and apologise.”
“Braggin’ is when a person says something and can’t do it. I do what I say.”
“I’ve made my share of mistakes along the way, but if I have changed even one life for the better, I haven’t lived in vain.”
“He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.”
“It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.”
“A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.”
“I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.”
“A man who has no imagination has no wings.”
“I’ve wrestled with alligators. I’ve tussled with a whale. I done handcuffed lightning. And throw thunder in jail.”
“Hating people because of their colour is wrong. And it doesn’t matter which colour does the hating. It’s just plain wrong.”
“Live everyday as if it were your last because someday you’re going to be right.”
“Allah’s the Arabic term for God. Stand up for God, fight for God, work for God and do the right thing, and go the right way, things will end up in your corner.”
